Event Details

Did you know that as an historic property owner, you likely qualify for tax or grant programs that may allow you to recoup as much as 20% of your rehab investment? Preservation consultant Kurt West Garner and Director of Indiana Landmarks Northern Regional Office, Todd Zeiger will team up to deliver an in-depth explanation of the financial incentive programs available to homeowners and commercial property owners, for restoring their buildings. The talk will be followed by a Q & A session where participants can ask questions about how their projects might qualify. This program should be of interest to anyone who owns, restores or sells historic properties.

Bios: Kurt West Garner is a preservation consultant with bachelor’s degrees in business administration from Bethel University and Architecture from Andrews University. He began a consulting and design business with a focus on preservation-related work in 2008. His range of work includes feasibility studies and conditions assessments, restoration planning, tax credit applications, and has written over 260 National Register nominations. He has worked in all but 15 of Indiana’s 92 counties. He was appointed Marshall County Historian in 2022 and was awarded the National DAR Society’s Preservation Medal in 2023. He is founder and president of Wythougan Valley Preservation Council, a former Plymouth City Councilman and Marshall County Commissioner.

Todd Zeiger represents Indiana Landmarks across the 21 county Northern Region to carry out their mission of saving meaningful places. He is a self-described “lifelong heritage conservation professional and advocate who is genetically wired to find new uses and strategies to save threatened historic buildings”. From opening Copshaholm – the Oliver Family home in South Bend – as a museum, to saving buildings such as a c. 1843 Greek Revival in Howe, Indiana, several historic buildings at the Indiana Dunes National Park or assisting developers with tax credit renovations, he brings to projects a practical, market based approach to repurposing historic and vintage properties. As the fourth generation on the family farmstead, Todd is a native Hoosier who practices what he advocates through the ever-ongoing rehabilitation of a historic house and barn.
