Just steps away from the Lake Michigan waterfront, the Lubeznik Center for the Arts features a high-quality, changing exhibition schedule in four airy, gleaming galleries plus a collection of outdoor artworks that reflect the natural beauty of its setting. The staff is devoted to showcasing the talents of regional, as well as nationally and internationally recognized artists.
Visitors find the Lubeznik Center, housed in a modern building with an attractive curving wall, an ideal spot to take in some culture before they head to Michigan City’s public beach, or as part of an outing that might include touring the historic lighthouse just down the shore or perusing local shops and art galleries nearby. The Lubeznik Center itself provides a unique shopping experience at its Gallery Shop. You’ll find the handcrafted works of local, regional and national artisans who create items such as blown glass, jewelry, wood-turned creations, art and pottery.
The Lubeznik Center is a venue for more than art. The Hyndman Gallery provides a spectacular space for exhibitions, but also accommodates musical and other performances as well. In the Susan Block Gallery, visitors can view the artworks on display there as well as nature’s own show through a wall of windows facing the lakeshore.
When Michigan City’s art center moved in 2002 into its current building, donated by longtime patron Shirley Lubeznik, additions and renovations of exhibit, classroom and shopping space were undertaken to maximize the building’s ability to serve the entire region in this prime location, along with development of outside art. Today, a stroll on the grounds takes visitors past sculptures, many in steel or bronze with themes such as clouds, figures or abstract concepts. It’s a beautiful way to enjoy art and nature together.
The Center also hosts annual events, including the Lubeznik Art & Artisan Festival in late summer and its Holiday Artisan Market in November and December.
