We’ve been known to get our share of snow—it’s the lake effect—and it certainly provides the perfect backdrop for holiday lights and celebrations. Throughout December, you can enjoy the largest drive-through light exhibit in the Midwest and one of the top 100 events in North America, according to the American Bus Association. The Washington Park Festival of Lights brightens up winter’s darkest days with over five million individual bulbs and a variety of holiday and traditional displays.

If you prefer candlelight in the midwinter, we invite you to join in the Christmas Candlelight Tour of Historic Homes . Each year private homes in LaPorte’s historic district open their doors to display holiday decorations. The event also includes a carriage ride, live music and refreshments.

Get outdoors and frolic in the snow. Bring out the kid in you by making snow angels, snowmen or a sturdy snow fort. Our best sledding hills are in Red Mill Park and cross-country skiing is permitted in all parks. LaPorte County lakes, once frozen, are prime spots for ice fishing. And speaking of ice, both Michigan City and LaPorte put up skating rinks once the temperatures drop.

While there’s plenty to do among our snowy landscape, the winter months are also a great time to enjoy indoor activities. Catch an uplifting production by one of our theatre companies or unwind to the sound of the LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra.
